Shawn Ambler’s 1955 Chevy pickup

Many classic vehicles experience an evolutionary path as they age.  Some may be subject to a frame off restoration and the show circuit.  Others experience a mechanical upgrade for driveability. Few however, follow the path that Shawn Ambler chose for his 1955 Chevy pickup.

Shawn's father found the pickup in 1994 while Shawn was serving overseas with the Navy.  They had been looking for a 1955 pickup for quite some time and this specimen fit the bill.  The truck was two wheel drive, rust free, primer grey and sporting a 355 stroker.  The truck also had an early version of Holly's fuel injection setup.  Soon after acquiring the pickup unfortunately there was a fire in the engine compartment and the truck was sidelined for four years.

In 1999 Shawn decided to get back on the project and incorporated a k5 Blazer chassis to create a tractor pulling/mud racing machine.  As part of this metamorphosis, the truck was upgraded to four wheel drive, lifted, and painted yellow with flames - all the while retaining its 355 stroker power plant.

By 2016 Shawn was ready for another project.  Rather than go out and try to find another vehicle, Shawn decided to transform the 55 yet again.  This time the transformation resulted in an amazing show truck that has won numerous awards and been featured on TV three times.

As part of the process, the truck was completely disassembled and media blasted.  From there Shawn performed any necessary body repairs and prepped the truck for paint.  After epoxy primer and more body prep, the pickup was treated to a beautiful two stage orange pearlescent paint job.  Five coats of clear were applied for a stunning deep finish.  The truck was also completely rebuilt and upgraded in all areas including wiring, interior, bed and suspension.  Shawn did all the work himself with the exception of interior upholstery stitching.  The outcome speaks volumes of Shawn's hard work and exceptional capabilities.

What does the future hold for this amazing show truck?  In speaking with Shawn, options may include large coil-over suspension, rebuilding the truck with a modern chassis for improved road manners, air conditioning, etc.  The list goes on and we can't wait to see the next stage in the continuing evolution of Shawn's stunning 1955 pickup!
