Mike Grotto’s Coronet Project

Just under 200,000 Dodge Coronets were produced in 1968. One relatively rust free example, neglected in a backyard in Dinuba California, was discovered by Mike and Dave Grotto in 2019. Mopar enthusiasts from birth, Mike and Dave were able to acquire the car for a song.

The car was transported to Mike's shop in Angels Camp where it sat. Unfortunately, other priorities took precedence and Mike decided to sell the car in 2020. After completing some work on the car, the gentleman who acquired the Coronet decided to part with it. He was motivated, needing money for a new business venture he was launching. Low and behold, the Mopar ended back up in the capable hands of Mike and Dave.

This time, the Coronet is in Mike's shop to stay. Parts have been procured including a crate 392 Scat Pack motor (6.4L Hemi), a Tremec TKX 5 speed transmission, and coil over suspension front and back with rack and pinion steering. The end product will be a full restomod designed for both show and go. Plans include a custom interior, digital gauges, Ididit tilt steering column, modern wiring throughout, custom body features including remote hood vents, 19" wheels, and a custom sound system. Paint color will either be Pearl White, Mopar B5 Blue or Black. Given Mike and Dave's track record with the "Toxic 66", this car should be stunning.

Mike plans on showing the car at a number of relatively close events including the Sacramento Autorama, the Portland Autorama and the Salt Lake City Autorama. In the meantime the car will be on display as a work in progress at our April 13th Cars & Coffee at Mike's shop. Can't wait to see the finished product!
